What Size Marine Inverter Do You Need?

Coffee maker trips the inverter, the microwave won’t start, or your batteries go flat faster than expected - that usually means the inverter was sized wrong. If you’re asking what size marine inverter you need, the right answer starts with your actual AC loads, your battery bank voltage, and how long you expect to run those loads away from shore power.

A marine inverter is not something to size by guesswork. Too small, and it won’t handle startup surge or multiple loads at once. Too large, and you can waste money, add unnecessary idle draw, and put more demand on the battery system than the boat can realistically support.

What size marine inverter depends on

The first number most boat owners look at is continuous wattage. That tells you how much AC power the inverter can supply steadily. If your connected loads add up to 900 watts, a 1,000-watt inverter is technically close, but usually too close for real-world use.

You also need to account for surge wattage. Many appliances and motors draw extra power for a second or two when starting. A compact refrigerator that runs at 120 watts may need 600 watts or more at startup. A microwave advertised as 700 cooking watts can easily pull 1,100 to 1,400 watts from the inverter.

Continuous load matters more than the label on the appliance

Boat owners often size an inverter based on the name of the appliance rather than what it actually draws from the AC side. A coffee maker sold as a 900-watt unit is usually close to that number in use. A microwave, induction cooktop, or air fryer often draws more than buyers expect.

The practical move is to total the loads you may run at the same time, then add a cushion. For most boats, that cushion should be at least 15% to 25%, especially if the inverter will support mixed household-style loads.

Surge load is where undersized inverters fail

This is where plenty of systems seem fine on paper but perform poorly on the water. A TV, charger, and small galley appliance may fit inside the continuous rating, but if a compressor starts at the same time, the inverter may shut down.

That is why a 2,000-watt pure sine wave inverter is a common sweet spot for many recreational boats. It gives enough headroom for typical light galley use, electronics chargers, and entertainment loads without jumping straight to a larger, more battery-hungry unit.

Common marine inverter sizes and what they support

There is no single correct answer for what size marine inverter works on every boat. A center console with a small battery bank has very different needs than a cruiser with an inverter charger and multiple AC circuits.

300 to 600 watts

This range fits light-duty use. Think laptop chargers, camera batteries, phone chargers, a small TV, or a compact fan. It generally does not fit galley appliances with heating elements.

If your goal is to charge devices and occasionally power a low-draw accessory, this size can be efficient and affordable. It is also easier on smaller 12V battery systems.

1,000 to 1,500 watts

This range works for a lot of fishing boats, bay boats, and smaller cruisers that need moderate AC power. It can often support a coffee maker, small microwave, laptop chargers, and other cabin loads, but usually not all at once.

A 1,500-watt inverter is often enough when the use case is occasional and managed. It is not the best choice if you want household-style convenience with no load planning.

2,000 to 3,000 watts

This is the serious-use range for many cabin boats and cruisers. It can support multiple AC loads with better surge handling, and it gives more flexibility when one appliance cycles on while another is already running.

A 2,000-watt inverter at 12V can draw roughly 167 amps before losses. At 24V, that same inverter pulls about half that current for the same power. That voltage difference matters a lot when you look at cable sizing, voltage drop, and battery bank capacity.

Battery bank size can limit the inverter more than the inverter itself

A lot of boaters focus on AC wattage and forget the DC side. The inverter can only deliver what the batteries can support. If the battery bank is too small, the inverter may be technically large enough for the load but still impractical.

A quick way to estimate DC current draw

Use this rough formula:

DC amps = AC watts divided by battery voltage divided by inverter efficiency

For example, a 1,200-watt load on a 12V system with 90% efficiency draws about 111 amps. That is a serious load for a modest battery bank. Run that for an hour, and you have used roughly 111 amp-hours, not counting the effect of battery chemistry and discharge limits.

Runtime is where the real decision happens

If you only want to run a blender for two minutes or brew one pot of coffee, the battery demand may be manageable. If you want to run a microwave several times, keep a fridge cycling, and charge multiple devices over a full afternoon at anchor, inverter size is only part of the equation.

A 100Ah lithium battery can support inverter loads much differently than a 100Ah flooded lead-acid battery. Usable capacity, voltage stability, and recharge profile all affect how well the system performs. That is why the same 2,000-watt inverter can feel perfectly matched on one boat and badly oversized on another.

What size marine inverter makes sense for typical boat use

The best sizing method is to start with how the boat is actually used, not the biggest inverter you can fit in the compartment.

For charging and light electronics

If the inverter is mainly for laptops, cameras, cordless tool chargers, and a TV, a 300 to 600-watt unit is usually enough. This keeps idle consumption low and reduces strain on a 12V house bank.

For galley convenience on day trips

If you want to run a coffee maker, a small microwave, or a blender one at a time, 1,000 to 1,500 watts is often the practical range. You still need to pay attention to surge requirements and not assume every kitchen appliance is inverter-friendly.

For cruiser-style AC support

If the goal is more flexible cabin power, including multiple outlets and occasional overlapping loads, 2,000 watts or more is often justified. At that point, battery bank size, system voltage, and charging strategy become just as important as inverter rating.

Pure sine wave vs modified sine wave

For marine use, pure sine wave is usually the better choice. It is cleaner power for electronics, chargers, and appliances with sensitive control boards. Modified sine wave units may cost less, but they can create issues with some battery chargers, audio equipment, microwave performance, and heat buildup in certain devices.

Sensitive electronics usually justify pure sine wave

Modern boats carry more than cabin lights and a VHF. Device chargers, laptops, monitors, and other electronics tend to be happier on pure sine wave output. That matters when you are powering expensive equipment and want predictable operation.

Cheap inverter power can become expensive later

Saving a little on inverter type is rarely worth it if the connected equipment runs poorly or not at all. For most recreational boat owners upgrading an AC power setup, pure sine wave is the safer buying decision.

Avoid buying by inverter size alone

A larger inverter is not automatically a better system. Bigger units draw more current at full load and can have higher standby consumption even when very little is plugged in. If your boat only needs to charge handhelds and run a small TV, a 3,000-watt inverter is usually overkill.

The better question is not just what size marine inverter to buy, but what combination of inverter capacity and battery support fits the boat. Matching those pieces correctly gives you better performance and fewer surprises when you leave the dock.

Check specs before you buy

Verify the continuous and surge rating, input voltage, waveform type, and any transfer switch or charger functions if you are looking at an inverter charger. Then compare those specs against the actual loads you expect to run, not best-case assumptions.

Also verify exact model and electrical system details before ordering. On boats, small specification differences matter - 12V versus 24V, hardwired versus outlet-style output, and inverter-only versus inverter charger are not interchangeable decisions.
